Developing Quality Psychology Graduate Programmes in the Caribbean: The Role of a Competency-Based Model

Workshop Description:

This workshop will address the shift in paradigm from the “learning objectives” model to the “competency based” model in the development of high quality graduate studies in psychology and how this new paradigm can be integrated into the context of a regional Caribbean Psychology. This workshop will also address the major issues and challenges in the development, implementation and assessment of programmes based on this model. Participants in this workshop will: 1) demonstrate a deeper awareness and understanding of the importance of a competency-based model in professional psychology education and training; 2) describe best practices in a competency-based model in graduate level psychology education and training; 3) identify the requirements and challenges for the development, implementation, and evaluation of such a model; and 4) outline concrete steps to develop and/or enhance the competency-based approach at their institutions.

Aida Jimenez Torres, PhD, University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras

crcp jiminez 1Dr. Aida Jiménez, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. Dr. Jiménez completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Florida State University, her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Puerto Rico, and a Post-doctoral in Family Therapy at the Department of Psychiatry, Harvard University. Her main interests in research are: Family Therapy, Disparity in Mental Health, Multiculturalism, and Supervision. She has published and given multiple scientific presentations in these areas in national and international professional conferences. She was past Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, and Co-Director of Clinical Training of the Vanderbilt-VA Internship Program, an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited internship. She was also past Clinical Training Director of an APA Accredited Clinical Psychology Program in Puerto Rico (Carlos Albizu University).
